Glitch Evolution

A variety of humanoid ancient statues underwent parametric modification by a digital evolution software written in processing. The program simulated modification of the genome by ‘cloning’ 3d models of the statues for hundreds of times, while influences from the digital environment had a potential small effect on the cartesian coordinates of every single vertex of the polygon model.

Analogous to natural influences like cosmic radiation that caused mutations in the genome of living organisms and therefore facilitated evolutionary processes, semi-random digital phenomena like the internal random number generator of the computer might influence the outcome of the process. Their deviation from a truly random data source could be interpreted as a virtual equivalent to natural selection. Samples of the final products were chosen for their aesthetic value and translated back into the physical world by 3d-printing and bronze casting.
